Charles L. Branch Jr., M.D.

Dr. Branch is a neurosurgeon who specializes in the spine and is currently president of the North American Spine Society. Dr. Branch’s practice has encompassed all of spine surgery, cervical and lumbar disc disease, spinal stabilization, and spinal tumors. He has been a pioneer in the development of a posterior lumbar interbody fusion technique that is reproducible and teachable to neurosurgeons worldwide. His early career interests in brain tumors led to the development of the Stereotactic Radiosurgery program at Wake Forest in 1990. In 1999, he, along with Ed Shaw, was instrumental in bringing the only Gamma Knife in the state of North Carolina to Wake Forest. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Radiosurgery, Neurosurgical Focus, and Journal of Spinal Disorders, and is Deputy Editor of The Spine Journal.

Dr. Branch attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Branch has been published in numerous medical journals and once served as editor-in-chief for The Spine Journal.



Kevin T. Foley, M.D.

Dr. Foley is a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He also holds academic appointments at the University of Tennessee School of Biomedical Engineering and the Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He serves as Director of Complex Spine Surgery at Semmes-Murphey Neurologic & Spine Institute, Director of the Spine Fellowship Program for the University of Tennessee Department of Neurosurgery, and Medical Director for the Medical Education & Research Institute.

Dr. Foley received his Doctor of Medicine degree from UCLA in 1979. During his training, he was awarded the Eben J. Carey Memorial Anatomy Award and the Merck Manual Award for Academic Achievement and was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He interned at Letterman Army Medical Center, where he received the Richard Mason Award for Outstanding Intern. He returned to UCLA in 1980, where he completed his neurosurgery residency.

Following residency, Dr. Foley served in the United States Army Medical Corps as Assistant Chief of Neurosurgery at Brooke Army Medical Center, Chief of Neurosurgery at Tripler Army Medical Center, and Chief of Neurosurgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he was also the director of the neurosurgical residency training program. During his military service, Dr. Foley was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Order of Military Medical Merit, and the Surgeon General's Physician Recognition Award.

In 1992, Dr. Foley left the military to enter private practice and pursue an academic career. In addition to a full-time spine surgery practice, he is actively involved in research in image-guided spinal navigation, minimally invasive spine surgery, and spinal biomechanics. He has authored 20 book chapters and more than 80 journal publications. He has lectured at more than 200 scientific meetings and educational workshops and has been a visiting professor and invited lecturer at several universities in the US and abroad.

Dr. Foley is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, the Cervical Spine Research Society, the North American Spine Society, the Society of University Neurosurgeons, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the International Society for Computer Aided Surgery, the Canadian Neurosurgical Society (Honorary), the Southern Neurosurgical Society, and the Tennessee Neurosurgical Association.



Richard Fessler, M.D. Ph.D.

Dr. Fessler is a Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. Prior to assuming this position, he founded and directed the Institute for Spine Care at the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN) and was Professor of Neurological Surgery at Rush Medical College in Chicago. Formerly he was Director of Clinical Services and Education at the University of Florida Brain Institute. Additionally, at the University of Florida, he was a Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. In 1994 he was appointed to the Dunspaugh-Dalton Chair of Brain and Spinal Surgery. Dr. Fessler's current hospital appointment is at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Fessler completed his Medical Doctorate with honors, and Surgical and Neurosurgical residencies at the University of Chicago. In addition to surgical training, Dr. Fessler completed a Doctorate of Philosophy in Pharmacology and Physiology, and a Masters of Science in Psychology. Continuing education after earning doctoral degrees, Dr. Fessler held research Fellowships at the University of Chicago Medical Center in Neurological Surgery and Psychiatry. The Chicago Surgical Society honored Dr. Fessler with the Excellence in Surgical Research award.

Dr. Fessler is a world renowned pioneer in endoscopic and microendoscopic spine surgery and has made significant contributions to development of that field. A prolific author, Dr. Fessler has written 13 books and contributed almost 90 book chapters to medical texts. He has published 87 articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented numerous papers at peer-reviewed symposiums. Dr. Fessler lends his expertise to the Editorial Boards of Neurosurgery and Neuro-Orthopaedics, and he is an editorial reviewer for several other professional journals. He is frequently invited for speaking engagements and visiting professorships worldwide.

Dr. Fessler is an active member and has led numerous senior leadership positions in many national and international professional organizations as the American Medical Association, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Neurosurgical Society of America, Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, North American Skull Base Society, Joint Section on Pain, Joint Section on Trauma and Critical Care, American College of Surgeons, Society of Neurological Surgeons, Southern Neurosurgical Society, North American Spine Society, World Spine Society, and the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. He has been a course director or faculty member for meetings sponsored by these groups. For the Federal Government, Dr. Fessler served on the Advisory Committees for the Food and Drug Administration and the government committees of the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Head Injury Foundation. At the state-level as well, Dr. Fessler has served on several advisory councils for the state of Florida. Dr. Fessler has five times been listed among the Best Doctors in America and recently in Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care. In addition to all of the above accomplishments, Dr. Fessler is a Medical Specialist and Flight Surgeon for NASA/Space Shuttle



Choll Kim, MD, PhD

Dr. Kim graduated cum laude from Harvard Medical School and completed his fellowship training in complex spine surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified by American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Kim is a nationally known expert in the modern field of computer-assisted minimally invasive spine surgery. He has trained specialists throughout the country on the safe and effective application of state-of-the-art techniques using image guidance and navigation technologies.

Dr. Kim utilizes a broad range of minimally invasive treatments to effectively treat all aspects of complex spinal disorders, including spinal stenosis, spinal deformities (such as scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, and kyphosis), traumatic injuries, tumors, and infections throughout the entire spine from the neck to the low back.

A leader in his field, Dr. Kim is the founder of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS), director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Center at Alvarado Hospital and associate clinical professor at UCSD. He is a Qualified Medical Evaluator and a past voting member of the FDA Orthopaedic Devices Panel which reviews all new spinal technologies. Additionally, Dr. Kim is an active member of the North American Spine Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and past-president of the San Diego Chapter of the Western Orthopaedic Association.




William Taylor, M.D.

Dr. Taylor serves as Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His La Jolla, California based practice is focused on the neurosurgical evaluation and treatment of spinal disorders, with a special interest in endoscopic surgery for disc disease.

A thought leader in the evolution of MISS, Dr. Taylor has been invited as a distinguished lecturer and/or panelist at numerous meetings and conferences. He is also a member of several professional associations, including the American Medical Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeon, and board member of Society For Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Surfers Medical Association

Dr. Taylor earned his doctorate of medicine from the School of Medicine at UCLA, and later conducted his Residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. He has specialty training in spinal surgery from Columbia University Medical Center, New York. He is currently affiliated with UCSD’s Thornton Hospital (La Jolla) and UCSD Medical Center (Hillcrest).



Neel Anand, M.D., Mch Orth

Dr. Anand, is Director of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Spine Center. Dr. Anand's primary area of research interest involves minimally invasive surgical techniques for spinal disorders and trauma in adults and children. He is also actively involved in the development of emerging technologies involving non-fusion spinal surgery. He was and is a principal investigator in many FDA investigational device exemption studies.

Dr. Anand is certified by the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and he is licensed in California, New York, Nevada, England and India. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NASS) and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), and Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS).

Dr. Anand has presented numerous papers at major academic meetings and has been extensively published in peer-reviewed publications, such as the Journal of Spinal Disorders, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Spine and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has contributed textbook chapters and educational CD-ROMs for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He also conducts numerous national and international courses teaching other surgeons techniques of spinal surgery.

Dr. Anand received his medical degree from the University of Bombay, Topiwala National Medical College in India. He completed orthopaedic residencies at the University of Bombay, the Royal College of Surgeons of England in London, the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool and at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Orthopaedic Program at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center in New York. Dr. Anand completed a reconstructive spinal surgery fellowship at the University of Florida Spinal Health Centers in Gainesville, as well as a scoliosis fellowship and a trauma fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University in New York. He served his surgical internship at New York Medical College, Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center.



Steven C. Ludwig, M.D.

Dr. Ludwig graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University/Jefferson Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Following his residency, Dr. Ludwig completed further specialized training in Spine Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He then became an Assistant Professor for the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Penn State University College of Medicine. Dr. Ludwig is board certified in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Ludwig has received many awards and honors including the Jefferson Orthopaedic Award for Outstanding Research, the Cervical Spine Research Society’s Award for Outstanding Research, and the American Orthopaedic Association Award for Outstanding Research. He currently serves as the editor for cervical spine in Current Opinion in Orthopaedics.

Dr. Ludwig specializes in a full range of adult spinal disorders. His clinical interests include degenerative diseases of the cervical and lumbar spine, spinal tumors, infections, traumatic injuries to the cervical spine, sports-related spine injuries, minimally invasive surgical techniques, as well as disc replacement surgeries.



Pierce D. Nunley, M.D.

Dr. Nunley is the Medical Director of the Spine Institute of Louisiana. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas where he received both his BA and MD degrees. Following his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at LSU, Dr. Nunley attended two spine fellowships. The first was an AO scholarship to study with Profs. Dick and Jeanerette in Basel, Switzerland. The second was with one of the four founding fathers and past president of the North American Spine Society, Dr. David Selby at the Dallas Spine Group. Dr. Nunley is also the founder of the Spine Institute of Louisiana Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization devoted to excellence in spine care by actively funding and participating in Research, Education, and Community Service. He has more than fifteen years of clinical and research experience and is internationally recognized for his work and dedication to his practice of improving spinal medicine and surgery.

Dr. Nunley has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters during his career and has been involved in several clinical trials as a principal investigator. Dr. Nunley has collaborated in the design and development of several spinal implants being used throughout the world today. He is on the Board of Directors for the American College of Spine Surgery and holds committee appointments in NASS and AAOS. Dr. Nunley began teaching computer workshops at the age of twelve and been involved in computer programming, systems design and implementation since that time.



Jeffrey S. Roh, M.D.

Dr. Roh is a fellowship-trained minimally invasive spine surgeon and Director of the Seattle Minimally Invasive Spine Center (SMISC). Dr. Roh is board certified by American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He received his spinal training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. While at Case, Dr. Roh was the founding editor and editor-in-chief of the Case Orthopaedic Journal. Dr. Roh completed his residency training at University Hospitals Case Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Henry Bohlman. Dr. Roh then completed a spine and scoliosis surgery fellowship at Cornell University's world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Although his education and training have enabled Dr. Roh to treat a wide spectrum of spinal disorders from the cervical to lumbar spines, his particular area of expertise lies in the burgeoning field of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MIS). He is intimately involved in training both national and international spine surgeons in the art and science of performing MIS surgery. Dr. Roh is an inaugural member of the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Society (SMISS).



Frank M. Phillips, M.D.

Dr. Phillips specializes in the spine and has special interests in cervical and lumbar reconstructive surgery. He also has expertise in motion preserving and minimally invasive spinal procedures. Dr. Phillips has participated in the development of a number of minimally invasive spinal techniques and also motion preservation technologies. Dr. Phillips' basic science research efforts have focused on biomechanics of the spinal reconstruction as well as biologic strategies including gene therapy to promote spinal fusion and intervertebral disc regeneration.

A medical graduate from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, Dr. Phillips completed his orthopaedic residency at The University of Chicago Medical Center. In addition, he served a spine fellowship at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Before coming to Midwest Orthopaedics, Dr. Phillips served as the Director of The Spine Center at The University of Chicago. Dr. Phillips is currently a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Head of the Section of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He has published and lectured extensively on spinal topics. He also frequently directs spinal educational courses for other spinal surgeons. Dr. Phillips is currently the Vice President of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and is on various committees of the North American Spine Society and the Spine Arthroplasty Society. He has also received numerous research grants. Dr. Phillips is the Principal Investigator of various national US FDA clinical trials evaluating cervical and lumbar disc replacement procedures.



Ray M. Baker, M.D.

Dr. Baker is a board certified anesthesiologist with fellowship training in pain management. His undergraduate training was in Biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with honors. He graduated fourth in his medical school class at the University of California, Irvine, where he then went on to residency training in Anesthesiology. He served as chief resident there, and received awards as both academic and clinical resident of the year upon graduation.

Dr. Baker has practiced pain management since 1993. He has been involved with both private and academic practice, and is currently President of Washington Interventional Spine Associates in Bellevue, Washington. He previously served as Director of Interventional Pain Management at the University of Washington, where he trained anesthesia, physiatry, and interventional radiology fellows, and achieved the academic rank of Clinical Professor. He regularly lectures internationally, and has published a number of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and editorials. He has served on numerous boards and committees, as well as scientific advisory boards. His current board positions include President-elect of the North American Spine Society, Vice-President of the International Spine Intervention Society, and 2nd Vice-President of the National Association of Spine Specialists.

Dr. Baker’s current areas of interest include healthcare policy, medical professionalism, treatment outcomes, and improving spinal diagnostics. He has served as Chair of the non-operative coding committee at NASS, and currently holds positions with the ethics, performance measurement, patient registry, and coding committees, as well as the CMS Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MedCAC). He has also served on boards for the Puget Sound Health Alliance and United Healthcare, where he was involved in healthcare policy issues, and has presented before the FDA and the AMA- CPT relative value update committee on issues related to medical devices, coding, and reimbursement.



Michael Whitworth, M.D.

Dr. Whitworth is a national leader in the development of minimally invasive spine surgical techniques, including endoscopic discectomy. He practices interventional pain medicine and is involved in research with artificial nucleus technologies.

In addition to his practice, he also educates other pain specialists. He is former course director for the Society for Pain Practice Management (SPPM) national courses; is a faculty instructor and lecturer for ISIS, ASIPP, and PASSOR; and serves as a board member of the International Spinal Intervention Society.

With continuing activity in pain research, he remains on the cutting edge of pain therapies and the most advanced technologies for treatment and diagnosis of pain conditions. Dr. Whitworth holds board certifications from the American Board of Pain Medicine, American Board of Interventional Pain Medicine, American Board of Minimally Invasive Spine Medicine and Surgery, American Board of Anesthesiology, American Academy of Pain Management, and is a fellow of the International Institute of Pain and the International College of Surgeons. He is also on the board of directors of the two largest physician pain organizations in the US: ISIS and American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Bradley Vilims

Dr. Bradley Vilims is a board certified anesthesiologist who fellowship trained in pain management at the respected Bowman Gray School of Medicine, at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Vilims specializes in diagnostic and therapeutic spinal injections and advanced interventions, with more than 17 years of experience in interventional pain management.

Dr. Vilims is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pain Medicine. He is CEO and President of the Colorado Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and is a member of the Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists, the Colorado Pain Society, International Spinal Injection Society (ISIS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP).

Dr. Vilims is actively involved in research, publication and presentation on a variety of topics in advanced interventional pain medicine. He is the principle investigator for a current study regarding Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Dr. Vilims is an ISIS instructor, a member of NASS and is actively involved in physician proctoring of interventional pain management strategies and procedures.


Michael Furman, MD, M.S.

Dr. Furman is a board certified physiatrist with ACGME suspecialization in Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine. He earned his MS in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University, his MD from Temple University, PM&R residency from Temple University, and Interventional Pain Fellowship at Georgia Pain Physicians (formerly Georgia Spine and Sports Physicians)

He is the founder and director of the Interventional Spine Fellowship at Orthopaedic and Spine Specialists in York, PA, affiliated with Nassau University Medical Center. He has trained over 25 interventional Spine fellows. He has been a director or instructor at numerous AAPM&R, PASSOR, ISIS and NASS courses and workshops. He is recognized as a thought leader and educator in Spine Care and has won numerous awards for his teaching and clinical care including the PASSOR distinguished Clinician award and the Rosenthal Award.

Dr Furman’s passion is teaching on various subjects including Spine Care, safe and efficient application of spinal technology, billing/coding, and risk management. He has authored numerous book chapters and original research articles. His special area of interest is the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders and other painful conditions.

He has served on numerous AAPM&R, NASS, PASSOR, and ISIS committees and task forces including non-operative treatments, research, medical education, clinical guidelines, maintenance of certification, credentialing, billing-coding, socio-economics, finance and by-laws. He has served on the PASSOR and AAPM&R Board of Governors.


Michael Hess, MD

Dr. G. Michael Hess, M.D. is a board certified orthopedic surgeon since 2001 and special pain therapist since 2003. He graduated from Medical School at the University Dusseldorf in 1995, completed his internship at Marienkrankenhaus Duesseldorf, an orthopedic and trauma residency in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and an orthopedic residency at the Spine Center at Orthopaedische Klinik Muenchen-Harlaching. After a fellowship in spine surgery and interventional radiology at the University Hospital in Quebec City, Canada, he was appointed Head of the Back Pain Center at Orthopaedische Klinik Muenchen-Harlaching in 2001. In 2003 Dr. Hess went into private practice and is partner in the OCM- Orthopedic Center Munich, where he is responsible for minimal-invasive spinal surgery and pain therapy.

Dr. Hess is the current President of the German Interventional Spine Society (GIW e.V.), President of ISIS Europe and ISIS Instructor in the US and Europe. He is a pioneer in computer-navigation of percutaneous procedures like kyphoplasty as well as in endoscopic nucleus replacement. In the last years he has been invited as a guest surgeon to several countries around the world. His current interest of research is in the field of nucleus replacement.
